As we transition from winter to spring, a versatile long cardigan is going to be your best layering friend. It's the perfect piece to keep you warm without being heavy and bulky. I've styled long cardigans here on Poor Little It Girl numerous times. I even did an entire blog post (which is still one of my most popular ever over on Pinterest) on long cardigan outfit tips for petites. That's why today is all about how to style a long cardigan over a dress when you're petite. It requires a little more thought than just throwing on a sweater over any old dress. But don't worry, it's still super easy, I promise.
How To Style A Long Cardigan Over A Dress
As I mentioned before, you want to put in a little thought when it comes to pairing a long cardigan with a dress. Long cardigans tend to be a little frumpy when not styled correctly, so you want to ensure that your sweater and the dress you pair it with are the perfect match. I promise, this isn't hard to figure out, but just a few things to keep in mind before you just start wearing long sweaters with any old dress in your closet.
Petite Long Cardigan Styles
When choosing your long cardigan, keep in mind your petite proportions. I'd skip styles that are too long, sort of like dusters. They can overwhelm your small frame and be just too much. I like to keep my longer cardigans right above the knee. This way I get the effect of the longer style without it taking over all 4'11 of me. The mission when you're petite is always wanting to appear taller than you really are, so be sure to keep that in mind.
Make Yourself Look Taller
When picking a dress for underneath your long cardigan, skip on the volume. No, you don't need to be in a body con dress (even though y'all know how much I love one, especially right now during my 8th month of pregnancy!), but skip the big ruffles and tiers this time. Long cardigans tend to be a little looser and oversized in shape, so you want to balance that with what you wear underneath. This will accentuate your shape to make you appear long and lean. And speaking of long, since being petite means I always strive to look a bit taller, Don't go any longer than a midi hemline and try to pick dresses with a neckline that's slightly open to create that long line going up to your face.
Best Dresses For Long Cardigans
As I mentioned, picking the right shape dress to go under your long cardigan is essential. The dress should go past the hem of your cardigan, but not by too much. I love the look I did here with the midi hemline paired with the "at the knee" long cardigan. It keeps the long line going without too much of a break between fabrics. A great v-neck or scoop neck also allows for a little skin to show so you don't look too covered. Here are a few more dress options you can check out that would totally work with a long cardigan.
